Obama's immigration reform
Cartoons critiquing Barack Obama's immigration Reform
Created by: Tom Stiglich
Published: 2014 In the past year, Barack Obama has announced an immigration reform system, which has irritated many Americans. Last year, during the summer of 2014, the United States saw an incredible influx of unaccompanied Latino minors flocking to the United States. This cartoon was created around the time that this massive influx was coming to the United States. In this cartoon, the border patrol is portrayed in a very militarized manner; large steel fence, barbed wire on the top, and even surveillance cameras. Barack Obama is shown welcoming the newly arrived Latino children to the United States, chocolates in hand. This is a crack at how many believe that Obama is just freely letting undocumented immigrants into the United States, granting them amnesty. The border patrol agents commenting that "President Obama's getting tough on illegal immigrants" is in a sarcastic manner because Obama is only allowing the newly arrived immigrants to only take one piece of candy. Nonetheless, this cartoon portrays how many Americans feel towards Obama's immigration reform in a satirical manner.

Published: 2014 In this cartoon, President Barack Obama is shown standing on the U.S. Mexico border, holding a seemingly favorable sign to the United States. The landscape of this cartoon is interesting, on the United States side, it shows a nice, mountainous area. While on the Mexico side, it shows an arid, desert area. On the side of President Obama's sign facing the United States, the sign says "border is secure." This is what many in the United States want to hear, and President Obama even claimed to "seal the border" years back. How that is even possible I do not know, but it is what people want to hear. Yet, on the other side of the sign, facing Mexico, the sign reads "Enter here, free stuff." To me, this cartoon seems to being accusing President Obama of contradicting himself, and referring to the president himself as the "border crisis." This cartoon puts the president in a deceitful light. It makes it seem like the president is anti-illegal immigration, but in reality he is not. The "free stuff" part of the sign makes it seem like Latino immigrants mooch off of the United States. This is completely untrue, as the majority who flee to the United States do so for work, and are extremely hard workers. This cartoon is just another example of the complex political facet that immigration is. Created by: Gary Varvel Published: 2014 An unfortunate portrayal, but a very prevalent one - In this cartoon by Gary Varvel, as family is shown complaining that they will be having "extra guests" for Thanksgiving this year thanks to President Obama's immigration reform. This cartoon is threefold as it directly represents two immigration subjects: 1) anti-immigration 2) Obama's immigration reform 3) inaccurate portrayal of Latinos. The way that the Latinos are portrayed is as home invaders. A Latino man is shown climbing through this suburban white families window, impeding on their lives. As I have stated before, this is a completely false accusations that unfortunately many believe - that Latinos are invading the United States and impeding on Americans lives. The lady in pinks face says it all, she seems afraid and disgusted, meanwhile the older gentleman standing looks irritated. From my experience speaking to Latinos who have came to the United States, they in no way shape or form every try to impede on the lives of the Americans living here, rather, they are here to live their own lives and provide for their family. This is the exact opposite of what is being portrayed here. For successful immigration reform to ever take place, or the negative public perception of Latino immigration to change, the negative stigmas associated with Latinos must be erased. Once this has happened, then change can occur. Washington to make any change to the immigration policies they want, but if the public still looks negatively upon these peoples, the change is futile. |
